Venice – Day 4

The final day of the OEMC 2011 and (boy!) is Robert glad it’s over… The last two rounds today brought him 1 lousy point (from 8 possible), Martha did even worse with a double blank, Rui got 2 points and Paula was our best player today with 5 points. Final classification: Martha 146, Rui 128, Paula 104 and Robert 72. The team ended 32nd.

Venice – Day 3

The second day of the OEMC in Mestre, Venice and our team – now complete – did not do much better than yesterday. Rui and Robert both scored 8/12, Paula got 5 points and Martha scored only 1. The are 160 players and Robert is now in 40th place, Rui is on 123, Paula on 132, Martha on 137 – the team is ranked 32nd (from 40).

Venice – Day 2

After the opening ceremony yesterday, today at the OEMC gameplay got underway, with 4 consecutive 2 hour rounds of play. Well, you do get a break in between sessions and they’ll even feed you, but concentrating for that long is not easy.

Day 7 1

Short tour through Venice today – the temperature may be similar to Val Gardena, but the humidity is much higher, so walking is tougher than biking 🙂

We safely wandered through the labyrinth to San Marco’s square (the signs are hard to miss) and bumped into Dimphy & Kees, two fellow mahjong players.

If it wasn’t for the OEMC to be held here, it would have been a miracle – later today (starting around 17:00) we will meet many more mahjong friends as we gather for the opening ceremony.

Voor het Open European Mahjong Championship (OEMC 2011, 7 – 10 juli in Ventië) hebben zich drie HUmaniacs geplaatst: Wim (Rijnders), Paula en Robert. Ton (Rijnders) had zich vast ook geplaatst, maar die deed niet mee in de kwalificatie, dus dan mag je ook niet.

Wim heeft inmiddels bedankt – die heeft waarschijnlijk gedacht ‘ik maak toch ook geen kans, dus ga liever paardrijden in Andalusië of zo’, maar Paula en Robert logeren in het hotel Alexander^*.

Deelname aan het EK is trouwens nogal prijzig, want voor €230 per persoon krijg je op de drie speeldagen de lunch, 1x een avondmaal en koffie / thee in de pauze. Met hotel zit je dan al aan een slordige €150 per persoon, per dag om een potje te mahjongen. Niet alleen een tijdrovende, maar ook een geldverslindende hobby dus…

* Zo denkt Robert er ook over, maar Cyclopaat wil nou eenmaal fietsen in de Dolomieten en om Paula – die immers niet fietst, maar wel filmt, foto’s maakt, water draagt en o.m. de vermoeide spieren masseert – te behagen, wordt het OEMC dan maar meegenomen in de planning
